Mr. Md. Kamruzzaman Akand has been serving at the Centre for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) since February 2011 and currently holds the position of Senior Specialist in the GIS Division. Over the course of his career, he has served in several divisions, including the Climate Change and Disaster Management Division and the River, Delta and Coastal Morphology Division, before joining the GIS Division. With more than 16 years of professional experience, he has contributed to over 50 national and international projects, including 16 as Project Leader. His professional expertise covers river morphology, GIS and WebGIS development, remote sensing, environmental impact assessment, climate change adaptation, and water resources management.
His technical expertise includes ArcGIS Desktop and Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, WebGIS application development, ERDAS Imagine, Google Earth Engine, UAV image acquisition and processing, remote sensing analysis, and land-use modeling. He also has extensive experience in enterprise geodatabase design and management, spatial data processing and analysis, hydro-morphological studies, topographic and bathymetric survey coordination, and environmental and social impact assessments. He has worked with prominent organizations such as BIWTA, BWDB, PGCB, GTCL, JRC Bangladesh, BREB, JICA, IUCN, and the Planning Ministry on projects of national significance.
With an academic background in geography, Mr. Akand integrates field-based experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods, including PRA, FGD, stakeholder consultation, statistical analysis, and geospatial techniques, to address complex environmental and societal challenges. He has received specialized training from IHE Delft, Object Vision, IWA, and ICIMOD and has authored and co-authored publications in internationally recognized journals, including Springer Geography and the International Journal of Disaster Resilience in the Built Environment. He is a lifetime member of the Bangladesh Society of Geoinformatics (BSGI) and a member of Lions Clubs International.
